Maen Watches is a brand originated from Stockholm, known for their affordable “Classic Moon” timepieces released a while ago and reviewed recently by Watchisthis?!. The two Dutch founders continue their quest in offering high-quality affordable pieces by releasing a new collection named Manhattan 40. The new collection’s name has the same inspiration from the Dutch ship, Halve Maen (Half Moon), which reached in September 1609 the coast of what is known today as New York, the island of Manhattan being one of the most known parts of “the big apple”. This collection will be released on Kickstarter soon and we are happy to be one of the first to present these charming timepieces.
The Manhattan 40 has four models in a 40mm diameter case: two 316L stainless steel versions with and without moon phase; two 316L Gold Plated steel versions in the same configuration of with and without moon phase. The simple version has a 7mm thickness and the moon-phase version, due to the additional function, a thickness of 7.5mm.
The first thing that strikes when looking at the case is the pure elegance: a delicately brushed case with a highly polished face. The flat bezel has a delicate chamfering and polished surfaces which accompanied by the anti-reflective coated sapphire crystal offers a captivating look. The Manhattan 40’s lugs respect the look of the case and bezel: the front and the belled edge are mirror polished and the sides are brushed in a logical continuation of the case brushing.
The black dial of the Manhattan timepieces is a little unusual – the circular brushed matt watch-face has the hour indexes bigger as you would expect. The hour indexes in steel or gold-plated steel are doubled for 12 o’clock. This detail creates a bold look – the watch stands out and catches the attention. Another eye catcher detail is the big faceted Dauphine hands with trimmed tip. The hour’s hand stops just before the hour indexes, and, at the same time, the minutes’ hands gets over the indexes till the printed minute indexes.
For the moon phase watches there is a subtle window revealing the classical looking moon-phase indication with a nice golden moon and stars. The watch face’s look is bold and distinguished.
To power the Manhattan collection two Swiss Ronda movements are used: the calibre Ronda 762 for the simple variant and the calibre Ronda W706.1.0028 for the moon-phase watch. These movements are robust and reliable – a good choice for a classic looking watch.
The Maen Manhattan 40 watches come with 20mm width Italian leather strap with solid butterfly clasp in stainless steel and, respectively, in gold-plated steel. The price for these watches is good for this configuration: 249€ (steel and gold-plated) for the simple Manhattan and 269€ for the moon-phase option (steel and gold-plated).
Due to the slender design and the great look, these watches promise a sublime wrist feel. The Manhattan 40 Collection will be available for order on the Kickstarter platform on the 23rd of May so be quick and reserve the chance to have a lovely timepiece.
