Oris is a reputed watch brand with a history starting from 1904. One of the most known collections of this brand is the Aviation Collection and the most known watch is the Oris Big Crown, which was introduced in 1938 – a pilot watch with calendar and an oversized crown that allowed pilots to operate the watch without removing their leather gloves.
Recently, Oris continued the charitable work started in 2013 and together with Australia’s Royal Flying Doctor Service (which provides emergency and primary healthcare services to people living in rural areas) released a second edition of the Oris Royal Flying Doctor Service Limited Edition.
Based on Oris’ legendary Big Crown collection, the Royal Flying Doctor Service Limited Edition II watch has an oversized 45mm three-piece stainless steel case covered on top with a sapphire crystal domed on both sides, with anti-reflective coating inside. The screwed case-back, in stainless steel, has an embossed logo of Royal Flying Doctor Organisation and the number of the watch (xxxx/2000). This Big Crown case has a water resistance of 5 Bar.
The black dial has clear Super-LumiNova® BG-W9 numerals and hours/minutes hands and a black central seconds hand with orange tip. The night/dark view of this watch is absolutely stunning. The pulsometer scale was upgraded, and has a contrasting deep orange colour, scaling it over 20 heart beats for even faster readings and a bi-directional rotating bezel for any time start of the measurement. At 12 o’clock, the beginning of the scale has the Royal Flying Doctor Service logo in white. The same white is used for the Roman numerals and the indexes from the inner bezel that can also be used as a timer or a second time zone. At 3 o’clock is visible the white on black day/date window.
Powering this beautiful tool watch is the automatic movement Oris Cal. 735 which is based on Sellita SW220-1: a Ø 25.60 mm, 11 1/2’’’ calibre with 26 jewels, with a beating heart of 28,800 vph or 4 Hz and a power reserve of 38 hours with bi-directionally rotating red rotor.
The calibre 735 has centre hands for hours, minutes and seconds, date and day windows with instantaneous date and day corrector and a fine timing device and a stop-second feature.
The Big Crown Royal Flying Doctor watch comes with three types of straps: a brown calf leather strap with stainless steel pin buckle, a dark brown Louisiana crocodile leather strap or stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp. Both buckle types have the Oris logo engraved, but the deployment clasp of the crocodile strap is so smart built that it minimises the amount of metal that touches the wrist and maximises the leather surface for less sweating and a more comfortable feel.
The tool watch, priced at 1,900 CHF with leather strap and 2,100 CHF with steel bracelet or crocodile leather strap, comes in a luxurious wooden box with a medal featuring the Royal Flying Doctor Service logo on the inside and the Oris logo on the outside. This watch is limited to 2000 pieces.
