Willis Judd: Raising The Bar

Willis Judd: Raising The Bar

News
In Haute Horlogerie there are many jewelry makers that turned watchmaker. Often this results in watches, with very refined details. In the world of affordable watches this transition is rare, but there is one brand that recently made this step: Willis Judd.   Offering a wide variety of different jewelry a reoccurring theme in their jewelry collection is carbon fiber, which they also picked that material as center piece for their very first watch collection. Remember that years ago you had these oversized fashion watches that looked so cool from a distance, but when you came closer you where horrified by the complete lack of quality? Well, these watches by Willis Judd are the complete opposite of that. Lets start with the price to put a few things into perspective.…

Movado Introduces Heritage Collection With Calendoplan

Movado Introduces Heritage Collection With Calendoplan

News
Movado has a heritage that goes far beyond the famed Museum Watch. One of the watches on which this heritage is build is the Calendoplan. As the name already indicates, the date-function was the big appeal of the watch. This is also because the watch was on the market in the 1950's, a date-function wasn't as standard as it is today. [caption id="attachment_1724" align="aligncenter" width="480"] 1950's Movado Calendoplan[/caption] The modern Calendoplan comes in two versions: A time-only and a chronograph. The time-only is fitted in a 40mm case, with vintage inspired lugs. Unlike its predecessor, is the modern Calendoplan fitted with a central seconds hand. The triangle shaped hour markers give the watch character, and Movado matches the date-wheel to the dial color. Especially on a watch named "Calendoplan" a…

Meet The New TAG-Heuer Link Ladies

Meet The New TAG-Heuer Link Ladies

News
The Link has become one of TAG-Heuer's iconic designs that even seduced Jason Bourne. On an everlasting quest to stay current the brand introduces the new Link Ladies.   It is actually hard to believe that the Link-collection was first introduced in 1987! That makes it almost three decades old, yet regular updates have kept the model still fresh. The new TAG-Heuer Link Ladies is no difference. It's design has been made a bit more abstract, and more in-line with the men's model. The design definitely very strong! It is very fresh and current, yet you still recognize the original link in the design. The case is 32mm which is a very nice size, and adds to the versatility of the watch. It can be comfortably worn on a daily…

The Rado Ceramica Reborn (with interview designer)

The Rado Ceramica Reborn (with interview designer)

News
The Ceramica has always been an important watch for Rado. But even, or maybe especially, these watches need a refresher every once in a while. Rado trusted this to the capable hands of Konstantin Grcic, an industrial designer best known for his Chair_One design. The biggest change Grcic made on the new Ceramica was the use of matted High-Tech ceramics. It does indeed give the men's model a completely different look and feel, not to mention make it look far more masculine. Of the two models, the signature model is limited to 700 pieces, plus one for Grcic himself. Here the typography is making a difference. Grcic says that he was inspired by aviation watches, when he designed the dial. We can most certainly see that, and although it suits…

Casio G-Shock Finally Releases Quad Sensor Gulfmaster

Casio G-Shock Finally Releases Quad Sensor Gulfmaster

News
It has been a long wait for G-shock fans because already at the Baselworld watch fair of this year, did Casio announce the new Gulfmaster. Why all the excitement? Well, this is the very first time that Casio G-shock combines a water depth sensor with a atmospheric pressure sensor (altimeter/barometer), temperature sensor (thermometer), and magnetic sensor for compass readings in a single watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=o-nGmDBjFH8 The new Gulfmaster was developed especially with coast guard personnel in mind. They indeed have to operate under extremely challenging conditions in which the functions of the G-shock can come in handy, but quite frankly even when you have a less demanding trip in mind, the Gulfmaster will be a great companion. The atmospheric pressure sensor is especially handy because it can help predict sudden change in…

Maurice Lacroix Aikon: On the Road Back?

Maurice Lacroix Aikon: On the Road Back?

News
In 2013 and after 13 years of success the Swiss brand decided to stop the production of the Calypso which was their most iconic timepiece. Today, it’s time to launch something that could be as popular as this model, and what’s better than to take the inspiration from what had worked before: Meet the Aikon, hopefully Maurcie Lacroix newest (a)ikon-ic timepiece. The new Aikon collection consists of 3 models: Chronograph (44mm), Gents (42mm) and Ladies (35mm). Each of the three models shares a common identity with some design elements taken from the Calypso collection, that have made this one a classic timepiece since 1990. Even if the Pontos is Maurice Lacroix's flagship product in terms of mechanical watches, this new Aikon might take on this role for the quartz watches.…

Christian Valentin: How Low Can You Go?

Christian Valentin: How Low Can You Go?

News
$52,- for a watch on Kickstarter. Needless to say that it made all my alarm bells go off. Because a watch at this price point is usually ordered in bulk from Alibaba, stamped with a logo, and sold as the next big thing through crowd funding. But not this time..... $52,- buys you this time a charming watch with a wooden dial and a case crafted from bamboo. Personally I am a big fan of bamboo. It grows very fast, it is environmentally friendly, while you still get a natural product that is also very strong, and it also happens to have a unique texture. $52,- worth of watch, doesn't mean that there isn't a designer behind it. In this case it's Christian Valentin. Normally I am not a fan…

Why Isn’t This A Success On Indiegogo?

Why Isn’t This A Success On Indiegogo?

News
There is currently a watch offered on Indiegogo and I am trying to figure out why it is not a success? At time of writing it has 3 backers with 13 days to go, and raised $291,- of a $15.000,- goal, so it does look grim for this campaign. Of course this is not strange by itself, not every Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaign succeed. However, we are talking here about N plus ONE designs customizeable watch, which is not only highly original, but also very affordable. $95,- buys you a well designed watch with three different bezels that you can switch out by screwing them on and off. The watch is powered by a Ronda quartz movement, comes with a…
